Yum Cheok is an audio-visual project that takes the sounds of Hong Kong and twists them into new textures, atmospheres and songs. Toeing a bold and ambitious new line between electronic music and sound art, The Sound of Speed is the culmination of two years of work spent recording and manipulating the immense din of daily life in the fast-paced yet defiantly traditional metropolis.

The phrase ‘yum cheok’ translates from Cantonese as ‘Speed of Sound’, and while the visual aspect of the project still bears this name, the title of the album reflects a change in perspective; it aims to capture ‘The Sound of Speed’: chance encounters with singers in parks, the declarations of ATM machines, iconic sounds of Chinese opera and the trademark beeps of the subway system are just a few threads from Hong Kong’s rich audial tapestry which have been woven into new forms; serving both as documentation and interpretation of the more ear-catching noises that permeate at a high velocity.

No foreign samples or instruments were used to make this record: 100% of the sounds were constructed from recordings taken around the city - be it a chopped-up sample of a street performer, the bassy tone of a double decker bus turned to a kick drum, or the buzzing from an electricity plant.
